Gina and I approached the receptionist with polite smiles plastered on our faces.

“Hello again. Maggie O’Flynn. I’m to pick up something from Ryan Dean.”

“Yes, it is…right here.” He shuffled through some large envelopes on the desk. As he did so, the address on one caught my eye.

A few shuffles later, he found the envelope with my name on the front.

“Here you go.” He handed me the envelope. My name was written by hand on the front. That was a good sign that Ryan had followed our directions for handwriting.

“Thank you. You have a good day,” I trilled.

He looked up at me quizzically. “Uh, you too.”

I doubted anyone had ever wished him a good day while sitting at that post.

We scurried out of there without wasting any time.

Gina had barely buckled her seatbelt when she said, “So, open them up!”

The three new samples were definitely calling to me.

“No, I think I want to wait until we’re someplace where we can really give them a good look.”

“Really?” Her squeal hurt my ears in the tight confines of the car.

“Yep, really. Let’s go to the tea room. But first, I just have to swing by Jeremy Fuller’s office and drop off the paper for him and Amy. Really quick. In and out. He said to just leave it with the secretary in the front office.”

“Sure.” I knew Gina wasn’t happy. She wasn’t one of those people who can wait for gratification. She wants it now. But I wanted to do this right this time. Not a quick perusal in the car.

“Hey, Gina. Remember that these aren’t just any handwriting samples. These are from the three grumps. We want to enjoy every minute of comparing their samples to the note.”

This appeared to brighten her mood. “True. And I bet Rita’s handwriting looks just as angry and sharp as she acts.”

When I drove off, Gina was grinning to herself.

And I was wondering about that other envelope I saw on the receptionist’s desk.
